I had a very uncomfortable experience here as a newer shooter. During pistol practice, a round became misaligned in my magazine, which resulted in a jam. Instead of calmly attempting to clear it or explaining what had happened, the instructor immediately escalated the situation, told me my gun was “broken,” suggested it was extremely dangerous and that I’d need to take it to a gunsmith, and instructed me to leave the range without attempting to resolve the issue or providing any reassurance. The communication felt confusing and unnecessarily intimidating, especially for someone trying to follow all safety rules. At the front desk, it was later confirmed that the firearm was not damaged and that the round had already fallen free in my bag, making the earlier response feel excessive. I later had a much better experience in another area with a different instructor who was patient, respectful, and supportive, which showed how much staff approach matters. I genuinely appreciated his kindness, and without that second experience I would have left feeling very disappointed. Unfortunately, the initial handling significantly impacted my overall experience. EDIT: I need to correct several inaccuracies in the owner’s response. I was the one who raised my hand and alerted the RSO, I immediately stopped and followed safety procedures because I take firearm safety seriously. The RSO did not step in proactively. I also want to clarify that this was not my first time shooting. I have experience with multiple firearms and loading my own handgun. The round became misaligned while loading a very stiff magazine while feeling intimidated in this environment. The claim that the RSO was managing “18 shooters across 9 lanes” is also inaccurate there were only two other people present at the time. The owner’s response itself feels dismissive and condescending, especially as a woman in a male dominated space. Everyone deserves a safe and respectful environment to learn. I see this is a common theme with the owner becoming defensive instead of learning to do better as a business. Based on this experience and the response to my review, I will be steering my friends away from this range and toward more supportive alternatives. I am updating my review to 1 star.
Highly recommed coming to this gun range, at what ever level you are at. In class safety lesson on gun handling and mechanics was very good. 20yrs since I had handled a pistol and was good going over the basics etc. Excellent teaching on how and why you hold a pistol the way that it is taught here and the mechanics of the pistol. Once shown the mechanics you can take that away and work on your speed to fire the weapon. If you are over from NZ or Australia I highly recommed coming here. If you have never fired a weapon before and you would like a calm teacher come here.

I went to Shady Oaks Gun Range for the first time today. This is the most friendly range I’ve ever been to. Everyone was thoughtful, courteous, and friendly while keeping everyone safe. RJ, Lee, and especially Steven were above and beyond. This is now my Austin Gun Range of choice. Keep doing what you guys are doing. Really happy with the experience.
Place is great! Rate for how long you are there is good, range safety officers are great here, I went to rifle range to range my sight and had a great time. Hugh at the rifle range was amazing and helpful for me, staff is informative and good too. Definitely recommend this place for some good shooting fun or ranging. (50 meters max and 20 meters minimum)
All staff were really nice and kind. Rental rifles were also good condition. (VSKS and suppresed AR-15) Ammo price was also reasonable. I shoot 40 rounds of 7.62x39 and 20 rounds of 0.300 blackout. It was an amazing experience to shoot both round types. Hope to visit again!!
